After three over years of “Internet Wandering” and trying to learn the skillsets of Online Marketing on my own, I stumbled upon the Asia Internet Congress (AIC) (November 2007) through an autoresponder email from Internet Marketing Guru, Ewen Chia.

Carrying the usual skepticism of the rampant scams of supposed “Gurus” in the Internet Marketing field, I braced myself for yet another unrewarding experience at the AIC, hoping to somehow still be able to pick up a trick or technique (or two) to take my then stagnant online business portals to the next level!

Surprisingly, the conference gave me much valuable insights into the “DOs” and “DON’Ts” of marketing online, and why few Internet Marketers ever succeed. Reason being that they either “did not take any action after learning about it”, or they simply went their own route and did not follow a structured and proven methodology to success. It was here that I finally realized that Internet Marketing was really not a SCAM (as many believed it to be), but rather merely a tool (and not an end to itself) for the marketing of ANY product or service online through one of the different methods. Very simply put, IM is merely the online version of Offline Marketing, with its own unique methodology, skillsets and techniques.

An especially important lesson I learnt at the Asia Internet Congress’07 to succeed in an Internet Business was not to “reinvent the wheel”, but rather to look for a genuine and successful mentor to train under, and also to find like-minded friends who were equally passionate about marketing on the internet to embark on the long but fun Online Marketing learning journey ahead!

I therefore made a decision to take up two different courses to learn from two of the world’s most renowned Internet Marketing Gurus — the “World Internet Academy Leadership Training Program” (WIALTP) under Fabian Lim (CEO & Founder of the World Internet Academy), and “The Master List Builder Program” (MLB) under Joel Christopher Remandaban (The MasterListBuilder).

Learning to market online never was the same again under both these excellent mentors since - as I continued to strive to learn as much as possible within the shortest possible period of time to make up for the many lost years of wandering in the Internet wilderness.

From Joel, I have been honing my understanding of “How to Build a Profitable Mailing List” and how to monetize from one’s massive list, and particularly the importance of Social Networking, Video Marketing and Social Bookmarking in this day and age of the Internet.

From Fabian, I have in particular been refining my Niche Market Research, Traffic Generation and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) fundamentals, ie. particularly in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay-Per-Click Marketing (PPC).

Both Fabian and Joel have been excellent mentors to date who have way way way surpassed any expectations I had of them, and apart from being very willing to guide, impart and instruct, they are both also extremely approachable, friendly and fun to be with.

Personally, Fabian has also impressed me very much with his appreciation of the Internet Business - as in it’s not just all about the knowledge and techniques behind Internet Marketing, but what would cause an Online Business to “make or break” was really whether one understood that such a business was ultimately a business - ie. that one really had to think like a businessman and apply one’s mind to formulate one’s business blueprint before even embarking on any online business project. These principles of knowing how to appropriately research for a suitable market niche online and to execute one’s business plan to success are learnings I am personally deeply appreciative to Fabian all this while.

The Four-Month WIALTP Program which just finished earlier this week on Wednesday (April 23, 2008) has been a most rewarding journey for my quest for Internet Marketing wisdom and enlightenment. I will be blogging about this programme in due course, but take my word that you should not give this course a miss if you ever have the chance to attend it!

I also had the privilege of assisting as a “Mentor” for Fabian’s recent Internet Marketing Bootcamp (IMB) with 72 participants from April 4 to 6, 2008 in Singapore, and likewise finished the three full days knowing that the bootcamp attendees had undoubtedly benefited from this value-overloaded yet very systematically guided learning program. The IMB is another course I would sincerely recommend from my heart to anyone keen on learning online marketing.

Unsurprisingly, even as I am writing this, I am in the midst of our five full-days Advanced Search Engine Optimisation course (from April 25 to 29, 2008 - conducted once again by my treasured mentor, Fabian Lim) which would culminate in each of us being given our Advanced Search Engine Marketing Strategies accreditation if we should pass our certification exam with the requisite grade of more than seventy-five per cent!

Looking back at the years I have wasted away trying to grapple with learning Internet Marketing on my own, I would so wish that I had the opportunity to start off with the World Internet Academy Online Learning Portal at the very least.
